Peru - Day 11: Lima and Flight from Lima to Miami

On Sunday, June 23, 2024, we spent our final day in Peru exploring more of Lima before flying to Miami that night.

After checking out of Hotel Antigua Miraflores around 9:30am, we left our bags at the front desk and headed out for one last day of sightseeing.

Love Park and Barranco

Our first stop was Love Park, or Parque del Amor, a landscaped park overlooking the Pacific Ocean along the Miraflores boardwalk. The park is best known for El Beso, a large sculpture by Peruvian artist Víctor Delfín depicting a couple kissing. Colorful mosaic walls decorated with romantic phrases and poetry surround the park, while its location along the cliffs provides beautiful views of Lima’s coastline.

From Miraflores, we continued toward the Barranco district and visited the Bridge of Sighs, or Puente de los Suspiros. The wooden pedestrian bridge is one of Barranco’s best-known landmarks and has long been associated with romance and local traditions. It crosses above the Bajada de los Baños, a historic walkway that leads downhill toward the coast.

Our walk through Barranco also took us through Alameda Roque Sáenz Peña, a tree-lined public space surrounded by some of the colorful architecture and artistic character the neighborhood is known for.

Farther along, we stopped at the Bajada de los Baños to see the street art and murals found throughout the area. One of the murals featured artwork by Peruvian artist Jade Rivera, including a depiction of iconic Peruvian singer and songwriter Chabuca Granda.

Historic Center of Lima

From Barranco, we eventually made our way to the Historic Center of Lima and Plaza Mayor, where we walked around the square and took photos of the Cathedral of Lima and surrounding historic buildings.

While exploring the area, we stopped at the Museo del Pisco. Despite its name, it is less of a traditional museum and more of a pisco-focused bar and restaurant, with shelves filled with different varieties of Peru’s famous spirit and a menu of pisco-based cocktails.

After spending most of the day walking around Lima, our feet definitely needed a break! We slowly made our way to the Gran Hotel Bolívar, a historic hotel overlooking Plaza San Martín. Opened in 1924, the hotel is one of Lima’s best-known landmarks and is known for its grand architecture and traditional bar.

Spending some time at the hotel bar gave us a chance to sit down, relax, and rest our feet after a full day of exploring.

Lima to Miami

Around 5:15pm, we left the Gran Hotel Bolívar and took a taxi back to Hotel Antigua Miraflores to pick up our bags. The hotel had helped us arrange transportation to Jorge Chávez International Airport, and we arrived around 7:30pm for our 10:20pm flight to Miami.

After an incredible trip through Peru, it was finally time to begin the journey home.
